Prestigious place. Make sure you check the Dress Code before coming here!!! There is a Dress Code!!
This place has prehistoric rules and is very bad about explaining them to their guests.
University Club is an iconic NYC institution. It's an upscale experience with wonderful service. Might be limited to members only.
In the 1970s, I worked as an assistant to two editors in the fiction department of Holt, Rinehart & Winston, up the block from the Mercantile Library on 47th Street. When TV networks started to get sued for discrimination against their women employees, CBS took the matter in hand and created the Women’s Advisory Council consisting of two representatives from each of their seven divisions (of which Holt was one) to meet with an Executive Council monthly about what women were demanding and how to get it for them. As a Holt representative, I met with the Council several nights a week to plan for our monthly meetings with top management. These were a bunch of truly well-meaning guys who sincerely wanted to ameliorate an unfair situation. The women were earnest, too, high strung go-getters in a rather misogynistic corporate environment striving to rise in the system and get treated fairly. Being somewhat less ambitious, I found it easier to relate to the men who were mostly VPs and pretty comfortable with where they sat in the hierarchy - affable, friendly and fun to be with. I developed a crush on a Black divorced VP with a son he referred to as “Trip” - as in “ . . . the third.” Though it never came to anything, early on in our almost-courtship, he gave me one of the best gifts I’ve ever received - unaffordable to me at that time on the salary of an assistant-to-the-editor (i.e., secretary): a $25 membership to the Mercantile Library.
My most elevated moments happened when I upon entering the Library, Mr Something (don’t remember his name but we always maintained a certain professional chivalry between us) would call me over to the main check-out desk. “Ms. Ruthchild” (my name at the time), he would say, “we have a few recommendations for you.” And they always hit the spot.

I haven't been to the members-only University Club for perhaps two years. It is important to know that the Club has a strictly enforced dress code: Men do not need to wear ties in the summer months but a minimum of a sports jacket and slacks are mandatory and jeans and shorts are forbidden. Phones are also not to be seen (although you can check something quickly and discreetly under the table).
There was no line for the elevator at 1:00 pm and the upstairs luncheon room was half-filled with beautifully-dressed people who lunch. Service was excellent; food was not auctioned (where the waiter asks who gets what dish); portion sizes were large (and my host and I could barely finish two courses each). The menu did not have prices on it (or, at least, my guest menu didn't).
I'm always happy to return to the University Club when the opportunity presents itself.

Found out this library today and became a member to use their study room! So pretty and classic
Great gift shop to buy souvenirs at a very reasonable price range.
Beautiful structure and the events are always riveting.

Heaven right in the middle of Manhattan! Immaculate service and an astonishing interior. This has been by far my favorite place I’ve visited in New York.
Went for the fashion exhibit and wanted to take a peak inside . I loved it Very nice staff that offered to give me a free tour if I was interested . I’ll definitely take them up on that next time because you can tell the minute you walk in that this place is special . Quiet , serene and a curated selection of beautiful books . Yes there is a membership fee but I think it would be worth it for the events and having a quiet place to write and study . It’s all walker and wheelchair accessible , don’t let the stairs deter you they have a chair Lyft and automatic button to open door . A vintage Elevator can get you to the other floors . We went for a private event at the University Club, what a gorgeous place.
We went with our family and got an amazing experience in this Library like a Museum. Lots of things to learn from this place. The exhibition was awesome. Must visit if you are in NYC.
Amazing library!! The building it is comlletely stunning, the interior is breathtaking and it is divided in floors. Each floor apart from anything else has also a toilet which is free. There is a bag control in the entrance but it definitely worths it 👍 (New York)

Rude people and not helpful,They advertise 24 hours but it’s only open at 11 am , why can’t they just fix the hours on the website, people are very rude and nasty 🤢

It's nice, but they won't allow you to use the children's area on a day pass. Very disappointing. They should list this on the website.
Beautiful, comfortable, friendly, and well stocked private library. I love spending time here.
The New York Society Library is a gem. The oldest library in New York City, it was founded in 1754 - their early records are digitized and can be searched in the library website. The collection is wonderful, carefully curated, housed in twelve floors of stacks, most of them open. It has beautiful spaces for reading and studying, including desks placed directly among the stacks - one of which, the Green Alcove, is pure magic. It also has an exhibition gallery, and hosts talks frequently. An amazing institution, that keeps alive an inclusive and welcoming spirit. Indeed, as some reviewers before me have noted, it is members-only, self sustaining and independent. No stuffiness here, only true love of books.
An absolutely beautiful historic library. If you're considering going soon, make sure you stop in and see the special "treasures" exhibit. It has some incredible historic pieces on display currently, from the original stuffed animals owned by A.A. Milne's son that inspired Winnie the Pooh, to an original draft of the declaration of independence and much more. The actual library itself is beautiful too, the lobby reminded me of buildings we saw in Rome.
Absolutely SPECTACULAR, free. exhibit. TREASURES.

If you want to visit the famous Rose Room, you can't just walk in (unless you're doing research). You'll need to book a free guided tour through the library. They have tours 11am - 2pm. The rest of the library is beautiful too.
I always get a little anxious working in NYC wedding venues — often parking is tricky, venues can have short timelines for vendor ins/outs. The team at the University Club is always willing to help, the food was delicious, the venue was stunning and so clean. It was such a great wedding that I'll never forget.
I wandered in not knowing it was a member-only library. The workers at the front desk offered a free tour. The library was lovely and the tour was free, educational and interesting! The tour guide was really nice and I had a great visit here.
Born and live in New York city for 66 years never visited till today's exhibition tour. It is so huge, too much to see and experience in one day. I will definitely go back to seek out more treasures. A must see for everyone of different ages.

An extremely interesting museum. They arrange free tours about the house. It was very informative and educational.
What an amazing place to visit cheap. Did you know this library has a FREE pass? It is a great site, and so beautiful inside. We went there during winter, just to warm up, not realizing this place was free to visit! It consider it a hidden gem in New York, which people miss and are too concern with the busy and more touristy sites! Don’t miss this opportunity to visit this library!

If i was rich I would just buy books and make my own library instead of getting a membership to this stuffy place.

Interesting modern building that stands out for being too thin, even by New York standards. Stayed for half an hour to visit their small but fascinating art gallery. Admission is free. The guy at the reception was pleasant and helpful.

The MET is on of the interesting places in NYC. The ticket price is okay and you see a lot of culture form different ages. And best greets to the security man, I like the new york yankees too ;-).
This was a very relaxing place with an outdoor area. Great for events!

Very nice historic house to tour
I'm a student and I looooove the library at Roosevelt House!! It's so peaceful and quiet and just the perfect environment to do homework. I can't wait for a break in between semesters so I can finally have time to browse the AMAZING selection of books!! :)
One of New York City's hidden gems. A magnificent property which was owned and occupied by members of the Roosevelt family for almost half a century and is still in use by Hunter College and a Policy Studies Institute. At time of writing guided tours are only available on Saturdays, for individuals and small groups, and Fridays, for larger groups. Pre-booking is recommended because otherwise availability is not guaranteed. Tours, guided by well-informed staff, provide fascinating insights into FDR and Eleanor's campaigns and lives before, during and after the time they owned the property. Well worth taking the trouble to make a reservation and take the tour.
