We visited Lucca, The Walled City, on our way to catch a train to Cinque Terre. Although we did not have enough time to thoroughly explore and appreciate the beautiful architecture and art, we were happy that we spent several hours here.
Not to be missed. The highlight for me was the magnificent Virgin Annunciate by Matteo Civitali. A gem in the centre of Lucca

Beautiful. Climbed the tower; one of the best ways to experience the charm of Lucca.
Great view from the top. My favourite was the large painting by Giuseppe Crespi, and a stunning tomb sculpture by an artist that NOBODY is talking about... why????? Even the employees don't know who did this and there's no information to be found.
The facade is quite beautiful. The interior is not as impressive, but still pleasant.
Non è la più importante tra le tante Chiese presenti nel centro storico di Lucca ma a me piace molto. Si trova in Piazza della Colonna Mozza, anche se il nome ufficiale è Piazza Santa Maria Foris Portam (con chiaro richiamo a quando la Chiesa si trovava fuori dalle Mura della Città romana ... sulla Via della Rosa) ovvero, per i lucchesi ... Piazza Santa Maria Bianca (dai materiali in marmo bianco provenienti da Santa Maria del Giudice). Neo della Piazza? Essere "ostaggio" della vetture lì parcheggiate ma, ahimè ... dove parcheggiare? Senza le vetture sarebbe una delle Piazze più belle di Lucca con quella splendida Colonna Mozza che la caratterizza. Il suo aspetto attuale è tipico del romanico lucchese ma ha origini paleocristiane che si perdono nel tempo ... il 768 per l'esattezza. Al suo interno, a tre navate, alcune opere, tra l'altro, di Girolamo Scaglia; "Incoronazione della Vergine", e del Guercino, "Santa Lucia" e "Assunta tra i Santi Francesco e Alessandro"; un Tabernacolo in marmi pregiati e lapislazzuli, proveniente dalla Certosa di Farneta; il Monumento funebre della famiglia Mazzarosa; un Sarcofago in marmo risalente al III secolo d.C., rappresentante il "Profeta Elia nella Fossa dei Leoni" ed, infine, un Altare Maggiore in marmo bianco del Civitali con una splendida statua della Madonna. Interessante, anche se non ho potuto osservare il "funzionamento", una Meridiana a camera oscura (da una fessura, nella parete occidentale, entra il raggio di sole che colpisce "la linea oraria" tracciata su una linea del pavimento) che indica il "mezzogiorno vero" del luogo ... Lucca (7':55" indietro rispetto all'ora solare di Roma). Segnalo anche, ma non ho potuto vedere (forse nascosta da un cantiere "in perpetuo" presente nella prima Cappella di sinistra) la Cappella di Chiara Mastraini, detta "la Sibilla Lucchese" poetessa del Rinascimento. Non appena mi sarà possibile posterò le foto del luogo.
The 7:00 p.m. nightly Puccini concert was wonderful! The selections are brief so even those who can't tolerate long opera can enjoy these musical tidbits! The performers are classy and extremely well-trained. The setting is magnificent!
My only warning is that if you read that these are free, as we had done, don't believe it! The cost is €30 per person and they do not take credit cards! As shocking as it was for us when we expected it to be free, I must say it was still worthwhile! And one other piece of advice, if you want to understand the words pay the extra €5 to get the libretto in Italian and English. Then the program for the night directs you to a particular page where you can follow along in the Italian and glance to the right to see the English. It makes the short performances much more interesting!

Located close to the duomo, this church imposes with a huge brick cupola and roman excavations in the underground. Combi ticket ( duomo, bell tower and San Giovanni) is available.

The church itself is nice, going up the campanile is a must do when you’re here. It’ll give you amazing views of the city. A windy staircase at first leads up to normal stairs going all the way up to the top, leading to the amazing views.
Do go into the side chapels of the church as well for some lovely old frescos.

La Chiesa di Sant'Alessandro Maggiore è una chiesa di Lucca che si trova nella piazza omonima.
Great place.
This is one of almost 90 historical churches in the historical area of Lucca. It features an exterior mosaic. Interior is a mix of art and tributes to church priests over 1000 years old, while some structure is exposed as it is an example of appropriation of finishes to other locations over time. Lucca was a great excursion, a 30 minute motor coach ride from our cruise terminal.
Not a church any more, it’s used for art exhibition and maybe concert (judging from the piano at the corner). The walls are covered with names, learned later that it’s a shrine for people died in the wars.
Most extraordinary church facade. The city’s patron saint is preserved inside, attracting many followers daily. The week I was there happens to be her festival, there are flower display in front of the church that is like a mini-golf course with a garden and a pond. It charges an entrance fee but worth the visit.
Very atmospheric place - somewhat dark nave looks onto a well-lit transept, austere but not severe. The organist was practicing when I visited, the church resonated with music. The left transept seems to be devoted to the Mazzarosa family, the last monument I can see is quite recent, for loss of a very young daughter, must be a sad story.

La Chiesa di San Cristofero è stata chiusa al culto religioso, aperta per esposizioni di opere d'arte o concerti musicali. Bellissima la struttura esterna e imponente l'interno a tre navate. Bella esposizione pittorica, la Chiesa si trova in Via Fillungo a Lucca

Beautiful church.
Bella chiesa che si trova in via Fillungo, attestata già nell’XI secolo e ricostruita alla fine del XII. Bello il portale attribuito a maestranze di Guidetto, architetto di probabile origine comasca che ha lavorato a lungo a Lucca, in particolare al loggiato e alla facciata del duomo di San Martino, oltre che alle navate e si capitelli della Chiesa di San Michele in Foro. L’armonioso rosone centrale risale al XIV secolo. L’interno, sobrio ed elegante, colpisce per i nomi riportati sulle pareti che ricordano L caduti in guerra, essendo stata la chiesa convertita in sacrario tra il 1939 e il 1940. Oggi questo Bell’edificio è spesso sede di mostre di arte ed eventi culturali.
The church is one of the oldest in Lucca. It costs €3 to enter. You can purchase the ticket online or when you arrive. The church is open 9am to 6pm. When you enter the lady provides you with an information leaflet in your language. As you approach the church there is a large mosaic on the outside of the church and a number of frescos inside the church. Each look like they are painted yesterday. Once inside the church look up at the ceiling as this beautiful.

There are a number of beautiful pictures on the wall that look like they were painted yesterday. There is a frescoe on the wall that is very clear and detailed. In the foundations of the church is the archaeological area. In this area there are a number of mosaics and ruins of the old cathedral. One part dates back to 2nd century BC. There is a metal walkway that allows you to walk amongst the ruins. Inside the church you can access the bell tower. The bell tower provides views across the city. The only problem when you reach the top you have to look through a wiring fencing. This wiring is very close together not allowing you to get a clear view of the city and it becomes difficult to get a picture without the wire fencing in it.

Inside the church visitors can appreciate many interesting and beautiful paintings and frescoes. You can visit the archaeological excavations and enjoy a fabulous view by climbing to the top of the tower.

Aquest edifici conserva la disposició planimètrica i part de l 'estructura de la paret a la façana i al costat sud, fins a una alçada d'uns dos metres, mentre que la resta mostra els signes d 'una reconstrucció en l' estil neo - medieval del segle XIX. En els arquitraus de la porta dreta a la façana i al costat, la mà de Biduino és evident (segona meitat del segle XII); tots dos relleus tenen temes relacionats amb el culte de Sant Nicolau . The church where i actually got baptised myself a few years back. Called "white mary" or "foris portam" for it is white marble and it used to sit just outside the eastern gate of the roman walls.
It is an extremely interesting church for me. The Church of San Giusto is located in the square of the same name in the historic center. It was named after a 12th century Italian, Giustino Salce. This is where its name "San Giusto" comes from. Architecturaly temple is divided into three naves with an apse, the façade has an ornament in which the emphasis of the construction technique is visible in two colors in the upper part, thick strips of white marble begin just above the main portal and continue in the body of the masonry central nave. The main portal is noteworthy, one of the most significant in master Guidetto's workshop, both for the quality of the workmanship and for some decorative details, such as the torsion telamons that support the two lions jutting out at the sides of the lunette and two masks with a classic layout. In the seventeenth century the interior was renovated according to the Baroque style, somewhat transforming its original appearance. Since the seventeenth century in the church of San Giusto the cult of the Mother of God has been particularly alive, today venerated with the title of "Blessed Virgin Mary of Lourdes", in fact, in the front of the main altar there is the effigy of the "White Lady", who arrived in Lucca from the Sanctuary of Lourdes.
La costruzione più elegante ed essenziale del centro storico. Poco appariscente, ma è un piccolo capolavoro per proporzioni, tecnica costruttiva e cura dei dettagli.
Nella facciata esterna sono inseriti dei capolavori di scultura. L'interno, pur sempre interessante, non offre, oltre a quelli istituzionali altri motivi di richiamo particolari. Subisce il confronto estetico con altre chiese della citta, molto più belle come architettura.
Stupenda chiesa medievale perfettamente conservata e visibile, almeno esternamente, passeggiando per il centro di Lucca. Ottimo utilizzo degli stupendi sassi bianchi lavorati a mano e stupendo anche tutto il concetto architettonico dietro a questo edificio. Una visita sicuramente ne vale la pena.
Enjoyed the good concert here at this church. The acoustic was very bright and great for singer. The accompanist was well equipped fir the two singers. Loved the repertoire presented.

Chiesa nascosta ma di impatto a pochi passi da piazza Napoleone. Merita una visita di passaggio, poiché sempre chiusa. Vero espressione del primo romanico lucchese.

Fra le più antiche Chiese della città di Lucca e nel suo centro storico. Viene ritenuta un vero concentrato di elementi architettonici, stilistici ed artistici evolutisi nei secoli, particolarmente al suo interno. Peccato che non sia aperta al pubblico per motivi di sicurezza. L'ho sempre trovata chiusa.
