The bear pit of Bern is probably the only place you can see bears in a city without the cages of a zoo. The city is beautiful and it's charming how they've kept this symbol of the city alive throughout the centuries.

The Bern Bear Pit, officially known as the Bärengraben, is a historic bear enclosure located in Bern, Switzerland. It was originally built in the 16th century as a moat for the city's defenses, but later transformed into a bear pit. The enclosure is situated below the Nydegg Bridge and adjacent to the Aare River. Historically, bears were kept in the pit as a symbol of the city's strength and power, and they became a popular attraction for visitors. In recent years, efforts have been made to improve the living conditions for the bears, including the creation of a larger and more naturalistic enclosure called the Bear Park. The Bern Bear Pit remains a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the city's heritage.

It was great to see this place, but it's a shame we only saw one bear. But the place has a certain tranquillity.

It's a beautiful place with Bears wandering around freely without any fear. It's a free entry place and can be visited by families and friends 24hrs/7days.

we went but unfortunately the bears were hibernating or not let out so there was nothing to see. the enclosure is also very small and makes me question the ethics. nevertheless it makes a good picture of the river and city.

You possibly can't visit Switzerland's capital city without experiencing its coat of arms animal that gave it its name!🇨🇭🐻

Some years ago, substantial investments were made to offer the bears a conducive living habitat worthy of that name. Just make sure to plan your trip to Bern outside of the hibernation season to avoid finding an empty bear park! 🏞️

If you're up for good food, drinks & views, there's also the microbrewery Altes Tramdepot just within the perimeter! 🥙☕️

A surprise to us as we were doing a walk around bern. There is the old small concrete pit, however the bears actually have access to the hillside next to the river. This is not free range but certainly better than many zoos I have seen.

We were lucky enough to see a bear running around and playing. You can take a little elevator or stairs down to the waters edge to get a better view.

Had a great visit here today on 4th Jan. One cute little guy came up close to have his photo taken. He wasn’t out for long so I think we got lucky with our timing. Handy free lift down the hill if you can’t manage the stairs. The location is stunning and worth hanging around for photos. Had a coffee and snack in the cafe too. Highly recommend if you’re visiting Bern

Zurich Zoo is an absolute gem! Our visit here was nothing short of spectacular. The zoo's commitment to wildlife conservation is truly commendable.

The variety of animals and their well-maintained habitats left us in awe. We were able to see animals from all over the world, and the enclosures felt spacious and natural, providing a comfortable and enriching environment for the animals.

It's an enriching experience for families, nature enthusiasts, and anyone who cares about our planet's wildlife.

I don‘t know too many Zoos, but Zoo Zürich must be among the best. The management is doing a great job and is constantly upgrading ans enlarging the site thanks to successful fundraising campaigns. I believe they are doing a great job in providing a surrounding for the animals that is as natural as possible. Of course, the latter is more true for the never facilities than for the older ones.

As some other visitors already pointed out, the pond especially where the flamingoes and some other poor birds are secluded looks horribly dirty. Water istale, stinks horribly, animals seem totally neglected. It has been terribly hot too (around 30°C). Totally unacceptable. A sign writes "sorry pompe cassée" blablabla. Another piece of paper nearby covered by a plastic sheet is full of mold. Couldn't read anything. The deers, sheep's etc have no shade whatsoever, they look neglected and sad. A pitiful sight. This is just animal neglect and abuse. I will denounce this to the animal protection, hoping they will do something about it. Where has Swiss love for nature and cleanliness gone?

Zurich Zoo is known to be one of the best zoos in the world. However, our experience was extremely disappointing. The zoo is very big and can hold a large capacity of animals. But we barely saw any animals on the day. The directions weren't the most useful and it was particularly hot which made it even more of an ordeal. The inside toy train known as the Masoala express was a welcome respite and we used it often to transport ourselves from place to place. We didn’t see a lot of the indoor animals and even the whale: ocean animals sections had a PowerPoint presentation running! We went on a weekday and it was slightly crowded but no long lines. The restaurant within had a wide array of food and drinks which was quite enjoyable with a decent view of birds and ducks. We plan to go back again and hope for a better experience.

Great place to visit. Was worried about parking as I visited on a Saturday but this was very well organised and lots of spaces.

The attractions are great. Had to revise our route due to the car park we parked at and entering the park at a side entrance (hint this was much less busy than the main entrance).

My favourites were the elephants and gorillas. The gift shops and restaurants were good to.

Highly recommended. 5*****

Really nice Zoo, we went there after lunchtime (15:00) and there were no queues and it was super quick to get in.
The park was not too crowded at this time either, which in turn gave us a really nice experience as well.

I think this may be the reason many of the animals did not hide, so it was nice to be able to see so many of them!

After we walked through the full park, we treated ourselves a mini-safari-train back!

Zurich Zoo is a great place for animal and nature enthusiasts. The bird aviaries offer a fascinating experience as birds fly freely in spacious enclosures, showcasing their vibrant plumage and graceful flight patterns. The giraffe exhibit is impressive, and their majestic presence is captivating. The big room with trees and animals provides an immersive environment, giving visitors a sense of being in a natural setting. The zoo's commitment to spacious and comfortable habitats for the animals is commendable, making it an educational and enjoyable destination to learn about wildlife and conservation. 🐦🦒🌳🐾

Although La Gavotte boasts a charming atmosphere and delightful farm animals, our recent visit was somewhat disappointing due to the lack of guidance provided by the staff. When we arrived, no one was available to assist us, leaving us to wander around aimlessly without any direction. However, we still enjoyed the overall experience and the opportunity to interact with the animals. If you're looking for a peaceful place to spend some time with cute farm animals, La Gavotte might be worth checking out- just be prepared to explore on your own!

The zoo is quite small, although that is also visible in the relatively cheap tickets. The zoo is kept clean, staff is friendly, and it is easy to find your away around the zoo. However, it is not the most tourist friendly zoo - most of the information boards are written in Swiss or French. If you have a few hours to kill while visiting Bern I would definitely recommend visiting the zoo.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Bern Zoo and I must say, it was quite an experience. The zoo is immaculately maintained, with clean walking paths and well-fed animals. The enclosures are spacious and mimic the natural habitats of the creatures living in them. I especially enjoyed the variety of animals on display, from exotic birds to majestic bears. However, one downside was the limited selection of food options on offer. Also, some enclosures were difficult to see into due to foliage blocking views or animal activity occurring far away from viewing areas. Despite these minor setbacks, I would highly recommend visiting Bern Zoo to anyone looking for a fun day out with a little bit of education thrown into the mix!

There aren’t that many animals, but the experience is quite interesting as many of the exhibits are outside and makes use of natural environments (such as the side slope for the goats to climb up and down etc) and the river outside that adds to the ambiance. I can see how families with young children will enjoy this place. But the food is quite mediocre so I recommend to pack some snacks instead of buying there, haha.

The animals (poneys, horses, goats, rabbits, donkeys, chicken, alpacas etc.) seem well taken care of. Great for kids ! They can go close to the animals. It's a real breath of fresh air!
This is not a real zoo. There are some birds including flamingos, a number of goats and deers. That's all. And the place is stinky. The playground nearby is also unimpressive. If you are fond of botanic garden it makes sense to go.

Super!👍👍👍
Trotzdem schade
A perfect place for a relaxing stroll, amazing flowers bursting with colours..

The funny thing is that half of the zoo is outside of the entrance, so if you decide not to visit the zoo you can still watch half of it before the actual visit. It’s a small entrance price but the vicarium is so cool I really recommend going in. I saw happy animals, beautiful plants and beautiful enclosures! Its a small zoo but still nice to drop by on your trip to Bern! ✌🏼🇨🇭

Really good place! There is a place where animals walk next to a playground, grass and river - a beautiful place for children in the city center.

La Gavotte is a wonderful animal farm mostly known for it's pony's. But apart from poneys there are several other types of animals you can find at Gavotte. Goats, pigs, rabbits, ship, lamas etc.
More to that you can get a pony ride at Gavotte on Wednesdays and Weekends.
