Sabah Art Gallery
Reviews

Rather empty with only less than a handful of visitors on a weekday. The exhibits are mostly about the building architecture and history of the art gallery. I was hoping to see more local artists works. The architecture is interesting. Perhaps to come when there are special exhibitions or activities. Otherwise, seeing the exterior and art pieces at the outdoor is good enough. 😊

As a foreigner, it is not the type of art gallery you would expect. Depending on the exhibition, it might be OK.
We had the founder, Sabah artist Yaman exposition.... all in Malay, unfortunately.
Outside art was a curious collection.

I enjoyed my experience here, but I think having low expectations in advance is key. There are only two very small floors that are sparse. The signs are not in English, so the first floor on the life and career of Sabah’s state designer is fairly incoherent. At the time I visited, the second floor was an exhibit of geometric art, much of which looked similar.
Some workers were bringing some art out of storage at the time I left, and I enjoyed briefly glimpsing those interesting pieces more than what I saw displayed in the museum.
I think this museum is worth a visit and the entrance fee for foreigners is not a lot of money all things considered. I recommend going to the Taman Rimba tropical park nearby for a stroll and a fresh coconut before or after to make the trip to the museum more justifiable.
As for the museum as an institution, I question why the entrance fee is triple the price for foreigners when you don’t even have English signs, so we can’t really appreciate it.

Good experience at the art gallery! Great place to enjoy handmade arts and is fabulous! Every month they will have different themes. Ticket to enter is not expensive with free parking and recommended to visit there.

The two-floored gallery has different art exhibitions every 3-4 months. I really enjoyed Azlan Dulikab’s acrylic paintings especially the ones on surrealism and the feature of Coraline and Finn. It was a RM5 entrance fee for Malaysian, not so sure about the foreigner price. Wouldn’t mind coming back the next time to see what new exhibitions are in store

The 2 exhibits that were there really capture the inner thoughts and feelings of the artists while at the same time showcasing Sabah in its reality. Then again, art is subjective so you might have a different impression but definitely worth going to.

Sabah Art Gallery, a small art museum where mainly local artists can exhibit their work
• Closed on Mondays
• Open Tuesday - Sunday, 9am - 4pm
• Entry fee: 15 RM (adults foreigners), 5 RM (adults, locals)
• Location: a bit outside the town, walkable or take a Grab / Maxim
• Recommended time to visit: 30 min
• I love art but this museum is very tiny and doesn't justify the entrance fee. There are two floors where the exhibitions are located and you can see the entire floor and artefacts standing in one place, as the floor is a circle with the stairs in the middle. This reel has like half of the things you can see ..
• There are free sculptures outside which probably are equal to the number of the ones inside. Better to focus on those ones and save your money.
• There is no water dispenser, no toilet paper, soap is mixed with water. Very disappointing conditions especially for the price asked. I talked to the staff and told them my opinion in person, I even filled a feedback form. Maybe the management will rethink the tourist price as it's not justified, not even close.
• Can be easily skipped if not an avid art loved

As someone in Sabah for the first time, I found this institution, housed in a uniquely shaped building, a very helpful place to learn about the art scene in Sabah despite its modest size. Moreover, there's a small store in the ground floor where you can buy goods made by Sabahan artists, such as postcards. But of course if you're interested in buying any of the art pieces for sale on display, you just go ahead and make an artist's day!
Malaysians need to pay RM5 to enter, foreigners need to pay more.

What a disappointing spot to visit. I’ve seen pictures of the previous editions and they looked impressive. Now it’s all these blue posts and damaged whale shark in the middle. Don’t bother to visit, nothing to see there.

Passed by and it look interesting.
Looks like a demolished building with the pillars abandoned.
But the placement of some marine sculptures makes it look like an outdoor art exhibit.

Came here for the second time. Love the vibe and food.
Previously attended a night of Adele’s song, very good performance.
Came today for Song of Jay Chou, enjoyed the food and vibes. Chloe yuz performed well. Kudos to the pianist and guitarist too!
However Yiny’s voice was off pitch and out of tone in multiple songs.
Love the place and the performance.
Perhaps the experience varies with the singers who perform.
Would appreciate if there is proper pick of good singer as we paid for the performance.

Great ambience with great vocals eventhough is my first time listening non mainstream music like indie folk. It will be great if they add on small eats like tapas in their menu. Add on a qr code for ordering as that won't interrupt the performance. Overall enjoying the music night.

Probably an old building site remain. Nowadays turned into an exhibition site with some Marine mammal statues here. A nice photo point.

This is my first visit to this place. Came to watch a blues rock band perform. I was quite surprised to see how well the place was set up and the interior. Really nice high ceiling space, with a bar near the back.
There is food and of course drinks but expect to take a bit of a hit to your wallet.
Service was pretty quick, and the wait staff was pretty attentive.
It's a really good place to come watch performances. They've got a really good audio setup.

having a nice evening with a bossa nova concert. actually cool ppl visiting… the place is upstairs and has a nice ambience. drinks and food are normal. service is nice, sometimes a bit thoughtless. it is definitely worth a visit, to my understanding more for a drink or concert.

Happened to walked in to an ongoing show, so I paid the discounted entrance fees. The music, atmosphere and whiskey sour was soul-healing... Even though my wallet took a heavy hit, but I really enjoyed my time here.

First time here and it was great ! Waiters and waitresses were friendly. Unfortunately one of the waitresses blocked the view during the performances when asking customers to pay for their food and/or drinks. Everyone is seated and the waitress was standing not squatting down or standing to the side. Just my two cents, could this been done during intermission or ask the customers to pay right after they order instead ? Tq

Creative use of space and of an abandon building lot. Rather than being knocked over for another shopping mall or hotel . Why not celebrate local creative talents and give them a space to show off. Kudos to the organisers. Kipidap!

I suppose this is one of the attractions? No idea what this place is but can see they want to live it up as something artistic but seems a bit too abandoned.
Super hot during the day light. I stopped by here after bank visit. This place is nearby to many banks, Gaya Street Market, Suria Sabah Mall etc. So it’s a place you pass by and wonder “wait what is this” and took photos XD

The atmosphere in this cafe is everything you need on weekend night. Choices of performance & live band are great, perfect for hang out either with your friends or lover. Bear in mind, its a hang out space, so you need to fill your stomach first before you come here as they do not have much options on the food menu.

3 stars for the intention and efforts to create a place for arts in the city. But the execution wasn’t really remarkable. Too much distractions in the background. Standing in the place you can hardly feel the beauty.

Lovely chocolate shop! It smells really good from outside so we had to go in and discover their range of home made chocolates. You will be greeted by a very friendly lady who will assist you in trying and choosing. Thanks again for your time miss and for the tasting (the durian chocolate was an experience) We will come back.

2 stars for the effort they put in to create these... others than that, really nothing much to visit... they try but seem fail... directly opposite Suria Sabah mall... bit really, unless u happen to walk pass, if not... .....

Love the environment and vibes during one of the performance. Recommended to anyone who wants to heal and have a chill night after work. There's food and drinks served here but I was only here for the performance.

I tried dark Chocolate in every south east asian country and this one is the best. It tastes incredible, maybe because they make fresh bars almost everyday. I came everyday during my stay, keep it up!! 😀

Great chocolate with friendly hosts! Would definitely recommend stopping by if you're in Penang. Would love to attending the chocolate making workshop next time.

They have choc workshop for team building! Best 👍🏼

This place would sell more chocolate if they sold individual pieces of their handmade chocolate. That way people can buy a couple pieces to see if they like it enough to buy a larger pre-packaged box of chocolate. Another benefit: selling individual pieces allows people to buy just milk chocolate or just dark chocolate if that's what they like. The boxes have a mix of both.

Best chocolate shop here in Penang. Very affordable price than those shops in Gurney. Seller is very nice too.

You guys, My family and i just fell in love with this HomeMade chocolate. The Pricing are affordable thou. Its a small business but Superb Quality. Definitely a must Visit place When you're in Penang. highly recommend. We bought too much i think. perhaps this is what love feel like.. hehehe.

place you can find any kind of chocolate and easy place to find..

They're onto their second series of art! This time representing endangered animals in Sabah. Love this project and how it brings more colour and art to the city. I hope the Sabah government keeps supporting great projects like this because it's great for tourists like us (photo ops!) and surprisingly informative!
