The Temple of Portunus, dates from the first century BC. It is mainly intact and is a rare survivor of Roman Republican architecture. The area was part of the Forum Boarium, a commercial area along the banks of the Tiber.

Great spot to sit on a boulder in full shade and take a touring break while looking at some of the oldest architecture in Rome.

Beautifully preserved ancient structure. This temple dedicated to the God Portunus, a divinity associated with harbors and was constructed in the first century B.C. near the former primary harbor of Rome in antiquity.

This is one of the oldest temples of ancient Rome. And it has survived perfectly to this day. By the way, it is obvious that the temple was part of the oldest Forum complex in Rome, Forum Boarium (lat.).Information about the name of this temple was not preserved. So far this has not been confirmed. The river Tiber flows nearby. In very ancient times, they forded there and it was here that the first small port of Rome arose. We didn't get to see this building from the inside, but from the outside, it's fascinating.

Rome is a city of ancient temples and it's hard to not just randomly stumble into one. That's what happened this afternoon as I was headed from place to place. The Temple of Portunus is very well preserved considering that it was built in the 3rd or 4th century BC and survives. It is worth a visit.
It may seem odd that the temple is devoted to Portunus, the god of locks, doors, and animals, but there are good reasons for it. At a sharp bend of the Tiber River, the location looked over the Port Tiberinus. Portunus stood here and watched the livestock barges come into the city.
The grounds are open from all angles though the temple itself is surrounded by a fence to prevent access or vandals.

I thought this was a great place, not as spectacular as other sights but no queues or crowds which was a nice change. Two lovely small scale monuments in a small park. It is the perfect starting point to walk up to the Campidoglio as well.

I doubt many tourists make it over to this quiet corner of the city, which is a shame given these two intact, well-preserved ancient temples are here, as well as a piece of the Cloaca Maxima, and The Face of Truth—all within a minute’s walk of each other. This temple, in its unkempt setting of dry, brown, grass had an ethereal quality to it as well.
