Busy, but a nice spot for people watching.
Piazza della Rotonda, the square in front of the Pantheon is packed with people who want to visit the said monument. It's quite a pretty square with cafes where you can enjoy a coffee break after visiting the Pantheon.
The centerpiece of the Piazza della Rotunda is the magnificent Fontana del Pantheon and the Obelisco del Pantheon. If you've come this far to Rome, you're likely skipping through both to visit the world famous Pantheon which I saw in 2011.
The piazza isn't nearly as bustling or busy in the evening hours, nearly devoid of tourists. The Pantheon is closed and the huge doors are locked. But there's still enough to see here that it's worth a visit.

January 2023: Piazza della Rotonda is the square right outside the Pantheon. As the Pantheon’s informal name is the church of Santa Maria Rotonda, that’s how the piazza gets the name.

The square was full of shops and sheds at one point. In the 19th century, the piazza was famous for being a bird market, along side were flower, fruit, vegetables and cake stalls. It’s certainly a busy and hectic market, as described by various travellers and tourist guidebook at the time.

A great place to have a drink and some food, and partake of the view of the Pantheon, the best preserved Roman building.
The view of the pantheon is one of the best in Rome. The restaurants are not really good, but I found a snack bar that served good cappuccino for only 5 euro, which is cheaper than in many other places in Rome. There you can enjoy the view in peace !
