Not yet a total tourist trap. Once you move from the 100% touristy side of the TV tower and pass trough the station... You get to the center of old East-Berlin.
And it all felt a bit... Maybe we just got lucky? Stalls selling souvenirs and stuff they got from AliExpress. Lots of food stalls - I got an African beef stew with rice for 8 Euros. Rickety benches and tables in the middle. A 60's style magicians kid show. "Streetfolk" trying to get what's left on your plate.
I'm sure any REAL Berliner will tell me why this place is not so great and advise me on what else to visit instead.
But getting off of the stupid tourbus on my 24-hour quick stop in Berlin, I'm glad to have been here.

It's iconic. Maybe not to stay, but as a modern central hub, giving a view to both sides of cold war Berlin, it's a place to visit. The TV tower is fun, buy tickets in advance for a great view.
Alexanderplatz is a very happening place as it houses the world famous Berlin-TV tower along with many stores. It is one of the most famous squares in Berlin with well-connected Bus, Tram and Train services. There are events and festivals organised here almost every weekend.
This is happening shopping area with a lot of things to do. Many festivals and events always keep happening. I would argue though on whether this is good area to live. I personally felt that there are not many grocery stores nearby.

Very nice lively and clean. The amount of people gathering at this public square is astonishing. Many cafeterias restaurants all the major clothing brands and pubs.

This is a major transport hub and area of activity. As such it should better looked after by the authorities. Despite having it's own police station we saw very few police actually walking around. After Rio this is the worst example of street living that I have seen.... People on mattresses, in tents on street corners and under every bridge. A very lively street food area and even dancing did not relieve that shock that I felt.
A touristy place one should surely check out. Get off at Alexanderplatz station to visit the famous TV tower of Berlin. There are a few nice bars and places to shop nearby. We generally go to the movies as there is a cinema hall which plays movies in English. Surely well connected.
