McGill Parkette

The park would be beautiful if it weren't mostly populated by drunk or drugged-out kids hanging around Covenant House. The park is nothing short of incredibly dangerous when these kids are getting into fights, throwing empty bottles of liquor at passers-by and threatening them physically. Whatever back entrance there is to Covenant House needs to be closed, and frankly, the entire park closed as well. Each day, from the patrons of the Covenant House, the park becomes trashed with liquor bottles and general refuse. It turns what would otherwise be a nice park and street-corner into a vector for crime and violence. No doubt the presence of Covenant House and the Parkette contributed to the Ryerson professor who was stabbed and killed on McGill a few years back. I think most in the neighbourhood at this point would be happy to see it completely closed off. I know I certainly would. These kids need a place to go, no doubt, but Covenant House should take greater responsibility for concentrating crime and violence around their location and should impose stricter rules against those using their services for free threatening the public (in my case, physically assaulting the public) and causing public disturbances.
