Built in 1706 with the purpose of warding off the plague, the Holy Trinity Statue located in front of Matthias is a beautiful and intricate structure.

The statue is very close to the church and the statue is very beautiful.

HOLY TRINITY COLUMN
The Council of Buda made the decision to erect a Holy Trinity Column in 1694 with the purpose of safeguarding the populace against recurring plague outbreaks and as an expression of gratitude for its cessation. The initial foundation stone for the Holy Trinity Column was laid in 1700, in the middle of what was later named Holy Trinity Square in front of the Matthias Church, and the statue's completion was achieved by 1706. In 1709, due to another epidemic, this column was relocated to the suburbs of Újlak, and the city authorities opted for the construction of a larger and more ornate Holy Trinity Column, entrusted to a different sculptor. The inauguration of the current Column took place on June 11th, 1713. The hexagonal obelisk is adorned with statues on its cornice, featuring Saint Roch revealing his wounds, Saint John holding a cross, Saint Christopher bearing the child Christ on his shoulders, Saint Augustin with a heart aflame, Saint Joseph grasping a lily, and Saint Sebastian pierced by arrows. Below the cornice, three reliefs are present: the first depicts King David in penitential prayer, the second portrays the horrors of the epidemic in Buda Castle, and the third showcases the Holy Trinity Column itself. Among these reliefs, three coats-of-arms are displayed: one representing the Emperor, one signifying the town of Buda, and one symbolizing Hungary. On the three outstanding rims over the six statues are the Virgin Mary, John the Baptist, and Saint Francis of Xaver. The upper part of the pedestal is embellished with angelic heads, and crowning the structure is the group of statues representing the Holy Trinity: the Father holding a scepter, the Son with a cross, and above them, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove.

This Limestone Pillar next to Matthias Church was built twice. If this Limestone Pillar could talk it would say : " What does not kill you, makes you stronger." The first pillar was built by the survivors of the 1st black plague. When the black plague resurfaced and many more lost their lives... the remaining survivors of the 2nd black plague found it fitting to build the pillar again in Greater Gratitude to the Holy Spirit. If this 2nd Limestone pillar could pray. It would say: 🙏 "May the Father, Son and Holy Spirit 🔥 🔥... "Guide"you through the 2nd storm and May you "Too" have Gratitude for the King of Kings 🙏 🕊 🙏 !! Local "Guides" 🪨 Rock. 😆

Beautiful statue, located just in front of the Mattias Church, very famous in footage from the coronation of a Hungarian kings, most notably the last Hungarian King Charles IV (Karl I of Austria) in 1916. The whole area is beautiful and the Statue is close to other sites including the church itself, the Fisherman’s Bastion as well close to the castle. Definitely worth a visit when exploring around Budapest…

Holy Trinity Column is a beautiful Baroque 15m tall limestone column made to protect the city against the plague.
