Not great quality picture of it (was on an old phone) however, saying that it was lovely to see. Nice little walk around it. Well built. One to see if in the area for sure!

A memorial to a very important Scottish obstetrician and early founder of gynaecology who made childbirth a lot safer. Inventor of obstetric forceps and discoverer of the anaesthetic properties of chloroform in childbirth. It's well worth reading the story of how he discovered this!He is buried in the family plot in Warriston Cemetary in Edinburgh, easily found as it's marked by a tall obelisk.

My wife with her ancestor. He was the first physician to demonstrate the anaesthetic properties of chloroform on humans and helped to popularise its use in medicine.

This statue stands in tribute to Sir James Young Simpson, the discoverer of the anaesthetic qualities of chloroform and his promotion of it's use in obstetrics. Among his many achievements in obstetric, he also introduced obstetric forceps which greatly aided birth.

The memorial depicts Simpson as a seated figure. He is looking to his left and is holding an open book, which rests on his right knee. A worthy memorial to a great contributor to medicine and making childbirth safer.
