An appointment was scheduled for 10 AM, and as we were on our way, they contacted us to change it to 1:30 PM. When we declined, they suggested meeting us with a 25 to 30-minute wait. However, they made us wait for a total of 90 minutes and then insisted on another hour, which led us to terminate the unpleasant experience.

The brokers here are a mixed bag. Some are pretty nice, some are really corporate and stiff, and unfortunately ours was very clueless. He signed us an apartment and then gave it to someone else after we had a fully executed lease for multiple days. The company itself has some good properties but they charge way too much and just control the downtown real estate game. We paid a lot of money and still were put in an awful position where we didn’t get the apartment we were promised and had to scramble. It was a really bad situation and I would advise to really know who you are working with and ensure that this nonsense doesn’t happen to you.

The quality of service is based on the type of realtor you consult and I am happy that I met Matt who has been very helpful.

When I see a Compass listing I know it’s probably a gross price, even though they don’t mention it. They then go out of their way to have as many applicants as possible to start a bidding process, on rent. Awful company.

I never write reviews, but the brokers I was about to work with were awful. Found me worse apartments than I was finding myself, were not friendly and seemed to have a negative attitude about many other brokers and on my preferences for apartment needs, and advised me not to sign one of the apartments cause the company that owned the building was shady. They told me if I wanted that apartment that I would have to handle it myself, so I did! Reached out to that apartment company and ended up signing with the friendliest brokers and employees. Not one bad experience with R New York. Compass is a great company but their employees should be more personable that what they have..

Not surprised by the terrible reviews. Martin Newman answered 1/6 of my emails. He did not know the answer to any of my questions about the property.

I left work early to see the apartment after Martin sent just one 30-min time slot. Martin was extremely cold & arrogant after mocking me for asking about very basic information like the average electric bill, history of the building, and why the previous tenants were moving.

Lovely apartment, but I simply wouldn’t want to pay a 15% brokers fee to someone who isn’t worth my time. In NYC, there’s tons of realtors that are much more knowledgeable and helpful. Don’t waste your time.

Do not work with this company.
There are much better NYC realtors on the market.

I have also filed a complaint with the BBB. I was interested in a unit rental that they had exclusive leasing rights to. It took almost six weeks, ~40 days to complete the lease. In the New York City market this is an astronomical amount of time. Because of the delay, I was forced to negotiate an extension of my then current lease for a higher price, and was forced to pay extra moving costs for short notice moving.

This was not due to building board approval (took 3 days) or owner paperwork/approval (he was excellent and did his part professionally and quickly.) This was due to negligence on the realtors part. I had to largely broker the deal including paperwork myself because they were unresponsive to my requests. I have documentation that shows this with all the emails, legals, dates and times.

I went to the company and explained my grievance and they refused to lower the cost of their service to what other realtors were charging for units in the building. I had to pay over six thousand dollars plus the extension and extra moving costs mentioned above. It perhaps was my own fault for working with them but I did not have a choice as i was unable to pick my own realtor.

Long story short, find a different realtor. This isn’t the one for you.
