Came to the house for a temporary exhibit on a short story Welty wrote the night Medgar Evers was assassinated in his home across town. The exhibits in the visitor center are free, as are the gardens. There is a fee for a house tour. The gardens were quite lovely as well with signs talking about their creation as well as linking them to her short stories and letters.

I made a reservation on the phone a month in advance. Took my 92 year old mother in law to the heirloom plant sale at 9:00 and then waited 3 1/2 hours for the tour appointment at 1:00pm. We watched the opening video then we were told we could not stay because 10 people were the limit for their fire code. Needless to say we were very disappointed. I felt wronged.

A must see if you are in town to visit. The garden is small, but extraordinary. The house is kept as it was in 1986. I love the books stacked everywhere. Ask about the art, the letters, the views. The docent allows the tourists to set the agenda.

I’ve lived maybe 20 miles from this National Historic Landmark and have never gone until now. The tours are every 2 hours so check schedule on website. They also have limited space for each tour.

There is a store with books and other items to purchase. Entrance is free on the 13th of every month which I didn’t know but happened to go on the 13th. Her awards are displayed in the house with bookstore. The tour guide Sam stated that after she passed they found them in a closet under a stack of books or papers. She never hung any of them. Well, she loved to write and didn’t do it to win prizes.

Before the tour you will watch a 20 minute video. Eudora Welty is speaking, sharing and sometimes reading from one of her books.

I absolutely love that they give tours of house. The tour guide gave detailed information. You are allowed to take photos but have to stay on the gray carpet.

The home is decorated circa 1980. All of Eudora Welty books seem to be laying as she may have left them before passing. There are 3,000 books in her home. 2,000 are at MDAH. She donated the house to MDAH long before passing.

Her parents purchased the home in 1925. They wanted to live across the street from Belhaven College.

There is so much history in the home and the garden is so beautiful and inviting. I also love the side pitch attached to home.

I highly recommended taking the time to visit this site if you are a history and/or garden lover.

A unique museum in the historical Belhaven district, where an author who received a Pulitzer prize and a National writer award from the US president spent most of her life… if you've been to Jackson, Mississippi, you should definitely visit it….

Great museum tucked away in Jackson. I was in Jackson Mississippi for some work and always remembered doing a research paper on Eudora in high school. It took like 26 years to get here but I finally made it lol.
Purposely I didn't tour the main house as that was a guided tour and that I love to explore museums on my own. That package was a reasonably priced $10. Familiar with her work the visitor center and beautiful garden was more than enough and also free. If you are a fan of Mrs. Welty's work or an extensive gardener.... You'll love this tour. I gotta go back in the spring/summer months to get the full garden effects.
