We did a two hour boat trip that took you through a lock. Saw the Black mountains in the distance . After the boat ride it's worth walking along the canal .
One off thebucket list. Carcassonne is a must stop on any canal cruise. Great castle and good food.
A bit of a trick to navigate your way onto this narrow track, which is really an access road for a vineyard. The panorama is not worth the effort, i think. The view is mostly obscured by vineyard.. There is a much better view of the Cité further along the D6161 as you head up a hill just west of the next roundabout to the west of this panorama point. Unfortunately, there is no stopping or viewing point, but if traffic is light, you can drive slowly.
If you're just into breathtaking views, this is really worth it, even more so if you enjoy historic castles. It's Euro12.50 per adult including an audioguide bought separately at a desk after main ticket. If you have 4G buy the ticket using an online machine just outside the main entrance to the medieval city (where you select a 4date and time) as the queue for a ticket was really long. It's comfortably 2 hours well spent exploring the various rooms, towers and extensive ramparts high above the city. Did I say the views are magnificent? By the way...it's not a city for campervans! We found a quiet street and then 7 mins in using a bike or just use your camping aire as a base if you're staying for 24 hours+.

What a place, spectacular, jaw dropping from every angle. The cite is free to enter, wander freely through narrow streets enjoy the buzz. There are many restaurants, shops and bars plus the cathedral and the chateau and ramparts, the latter of which attract a small fee. You could take photographs all day long, I've just attached a few
Great place to visit, lots of medieval buildings to see. The wall city is quite compact with lots of quaint narrow streets, making it easy to navigate yourself around. The narrow streets also give lots of shaded areas to escape from the hot temperatures. There are also lots of restaurants and bars or ice-cream parlours for either lunch or just somewhere to have a relax with a drink or ice cream. All the restraunts were either with shades or lovely shaded gardens. We paid the 9.50 euros for the medieval villa and walked along the tops of the castle walls, which gave great views of the old city within the walls and panoramic view looking over the old town of carcassonne. A memorable day. It would be fantastic at night with the lights on.
Helping personal 👍 everything was smooth.
There is a jaw dropping moment when you first cross the drawbridge and walk up the cobbled street. You are transported back to medieval times and, although it's quite commercial and "touristy", the architecture has been lovingly restored and maintained! There are many shops, some selling very good quality art and some selling tourist trinkets and everything in between! There's a wonderful choice of restaurants to choose from and, surprisingly, very reasonably priced! A great place to wander around for a few hours!

This medieval city is so unique with its castle within a castle structures. It still breaths the medieval times, although almost all buildings have been modified to fit shops or restaurants.

They might have gone a bit more withholding on that part, that's why it's a 4 for me, as I like the fact it's being used, but not everywhere they took in account the history and authenticity.

Worth a visit you ask? Definitely!!
Beautiful city and canal is fab to take a trip down and watch how they do the locks
Amazing medieval city and castle. Had a quick visit but would need more time to really appreciate it. You can walk around inside the city for free but you have to pay to go inside the castle. Wonderful history to take in everywhere you look. There is a car park which we were lucky to find a space in during August, as the sign said it was full.

Carcassonne is a historic city located in the Occitanie region of southern France. It is renowned for its medieval fortress, La Cite, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is known for its well-preserved medieval fortress, high walls that you can walk on and narrow cobbled streets.
Nice place to visit. Old town (cite) is amazing and the whole city is beautiful. I recommend going to the castle if you like such type of stroll. Waiting around the cite, the city center, along the river is a very interesting and relaxing way of spending time. As in France in general, take care of the timings for meals. Pretty much closes down at 2pm, reopens at 7pm and close down again at 10pm

We did not enter the historical citadel, we just wandered around the exterior area and visited a restaurant for lunch.

It's all been very well restored and we had a great time. Amazing views from the entry / bus stop area as well as how spectacular the castle is.

Worth noting it was very busy so if you don't like crowds you're better off visiting this place in the off season.

Absolutely amazing castle!
The panoramic viewing spot was not crowded when we visited, only a couple cars. If it were even a couple more cars, this spot could be frustrating as the road is narrow, unpaved and requires going back the way you came. Hiking up frome the paved road would be better if the spot is more crowded.
Carcassonne is a lovely little gem
Beautiful medieval castle on top of the hill. Enclosed within the fortress walls you can shop from the handicrafts bazaars along the pebbled pedestrian streets or enjoy a coffee, aperitif or a full meal in one of the many restaurants or bars. Admire the views from any of the balconies and bastions that protect the historic centre.
Downtown, you can walk along the river or experience the city within the walls from one monument to another or visiting some museums or historic landmarks.
We used Cyclolibre to explore carcassonne, a fantastic ebike that took us along the canal and river Aude and out to chateau penautier

Absolutely stunning walled castle. Definitely get the audio tour. About a 30 min walk from the train station. The town inside the wall is very touristy..best to head back to the lower town for meals, etc. Just remember that many restaurants close at 2pm.

We didn't have advanced tickets, but arrived when it opened at 10am and got in without any problems.
Visited 28th May 2023.
Definitely a 4.3🌟

This is among one of the most complete ‘rempárt’ we have seen. It surrounds the town entirely.

The walk around the wall plus the tour of the interior took us close to 3 hours.

Proceed to the main hall where you can further understand the history of the town by watching a video presentation, before you start your tour.

Along the walls, there are numerous watch towers from which many different panoramic views of the town can be enjoyed. Make sure batteries in your mobile phones, cameras are juiced up. Better to bring an additional power bank or battery just in case.

Walking on the wall looking into town, you could see a large cathedral, shops, houses and restaurants. So, after your visit, make sure you go into the city and get yourself lost in its other attractions.

Going into the numerous halls within the castle, you will find various artefacts on display. They are an impressive collection.

The entrance fee to the castle is well worth it. There was a queue but the wait wasn’t long. However, tourist season was not in full swing yet. You can scan the QR code or queue to buy your tickets. I strongly suggest the QR code in July and August.

Your photo opportunities starts as soon as you exit the ticket sales office. 😁. Be prepared. A good pair of walking shoes highly recommended lest you want blisters. 😂. Bring lots of water. It gets very hot and humid. There are benches and areas inside the watch towers to take a short rest.

You will enjoy this castle and it’s walls.
Such an amazing place with amazing views!! It like going back in time! Overall beautiful walks and a great place to visit, the food in the cité can be a little expensive but totally worth it
Beautiful and peaceful place to relax

This is a 1000 year old castle that still has people living and operating businesses within its walls. It’s 10£ to your the ramparts and castle. Well worth the money. There are plenty of restaurants and shops to keep you entertained for most of the day.

Great Medieval place, full with history and definitely worth visiting. Only 45 mins away from Toulouse with a train, which makes it a great day trip!!
This UNESCO World Heritage site links two seas: the Mediterranean and Atlantic. It’s a few hops away from the train station and we enjoyed a laid back afternoon watching the boats.
Took me about an hour to get there from the city, though I was walking slow on a hot day (+35) and taking my time to look around and enjoy the scenery. It is a nice walk actually. The walk will offer nice views from different angles and different distance from the castle. To eventually get to the top of the view point (literally next to
The electricity pole) presents a nice and beautiful view. It is especially interesting from the photo perspective, considering the distance from the viewpoint, to blur away the picture horizontally, leaving the castle in focus. I really enjoyed that little walk, and back. It’s quite and peaceful, passing the vineyard.
The history of this UNESCO Canal is incredible. I’m not going to spoil it, get a boat ride for 10€, it’s absolutely worth it. They also have an English translator explaining the history of the canal. It’s amazing to watch and then experience (if you are on the boat) the lock mechanisms, that move the boats between these locks, which are splitting the canal into different heights.
A good viewpoint far away from Carcassonne Castle but obscured by the vines in summer. It's a lay-by to stop if you're in a car or there's a walking trail from the castle itself. Worth a visit
If ever in the Carcassonne area don't miss the bike path that runs parallel to the Canal du Midi. We did Carcassonne to Trebes (round trip) and the path is safe as it never merges with the cars. The surface is sometimes inconsistent (from pave to grail, from wide to narrow), but for the most part of the trail it is very easy, even for kids. Have kids see the locks system raising the boats that sail the canal and they won't want to leave.

A great place for a weekend getaway. Advice would be not to stay there as there is nothing more to see other than the fort. It's a good place for Toulouse people for a quick getaway.
