Great views from this war memorial

A dignified memorial that's very well done!

It was lovely to see all those who lost their lives remembered and recognised with this lovely monument in Princess Park.
It sits looking up at Edinburgh Castle.
The fresco is lovely and of amazing detail, it’s very much worth a visit, there are also seats nearby to rest your legs

This is free to access with your ticket purchase to the castle. The war memorial had dozens of books full of names of those who were involved with the Scottish military/ army. Beautiful memorial pieces. They do ask for no photos or cellphone use within the building (out of respect).

Nice

Cardiff Great War memorial is located within the Hendre Lake, Cardiff, makes it accessible for both residents and visitors to pay their respects and reflect on the history it represents.

A statue of Oliver Cromwell stands in front of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster. He was Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland between 1653 and 1658.

Loved so educational

A beautiful space and token of appreciation for those that served and gave their life!

Imposing but you can't get close to it from pavement owing to security restrictions.

Nice tranquil walk around the Hendre lakes.

Scottish American Memorial lub Scots American War Memorial znajduje się w West Princes Street Gardens w Edynburgu. Nazywał się „The Call 1914” i został wzniesiony w 1927 roku i przedstawia żołnierza piechoty w kilcie patrzącego w stronę Castle Rock.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. 🌹

Nice memorial monument.

Located in Cathays Park in the heart of Cardiff, the Wales National War Memorial is a striking monument dedicated to Welsh soldiers who lost their lives in various conflicts throughout the 20th century. The monument was unveiled in 1928 and has since become an important landmark in the city, as well as a place of remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
One of the standout features of the memorial is its impressive design. The monument consists of a central cenotaph that is surrounded by a series of carved stone panels depicting scenes from various wars and conflicts. The memorial is made from Portland stone and is adorned with symbolic imagery, including the Welsh dragon and the coat of arms of various Welsh regiments.
The site of the memorial is also well-maintained and offers a peaceful and serene atmosphere for visitors to reflect and pay their respects. The memorial is surrounded by manicured lawns and gardens, and there are plenty of benches where visitors can sit and contemplate.
In addition to its aesthetic qualities, the Wales National War Memorial also serves an important function as a place of remembrance and tribute. The monument is regularly used for official commemorations and remembrance events, and visitors are encouraged to leave flowers or wreaths in honor of fallen soldiers.

This reminds us the historical relationship between Scotland and United States

fantastically detailed monument to the Scots and Americans who died during WW1

A historical place with some amazing architecture which has some symbolic meanings.

Truly a dignified place to memorise the Scottish people to protect the country.

Just okay
It’s actually a statue

Magnifique monument avec des détails plus que parfait. Quel plaisir de voir le sujet avec un kilt

Great view of Chisel beach and a fantastic milk shake from the café.

This poignant war memorial is a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives as well as complimenting the architecture of Cardiff's City Hall and National Museum.

Very beautiful place

Fantastic view o FB the beach from here. Not much else though

A wonderfull memorial commemorating all those that gave their lives during conflicts around the world from all the Scotish regiments and all branches of the services , one of the highlights of the tour of the castle and also one of the most thought provoking.

I would come here once a year with my grandfather as a kid. Everytime it would be a cold day, but there would still be flowers, still be green grass and still be beautiful every time. So peaceful. Perfect spot to get away without leaving the city centre

A sobering structure to remember those that sacrificed their lives. I always feel that sacrifice is a big word and not a lot of thought given to the gravity of the meaning of the situation. Hopefully this strategically placed monument gives the families a place where they can honour their innocent loved ones.

Speechless tribute.

Scotland's Shrine. This is truly a hallowed place for anyone Scottish - you can almost feel the sacrifice made and I never fail to be moved by a visit here. Words can't really describe how visiting this memorial makes me feel - you have to go and see it for yourself.

This was solemn occasion as it was a chance to remember those who have given their lives in conflicts during and after the great war. It was a chance for veterans to pay their respects to those friends and family they have lost.

Lovely spot to look over Chesil beach and Weymouth!

R Tait McKenzie

A lovely memorial for the South African War

The South African War Memorial, also known as the Boer War Memorial, is a war memorial in Cardiff, Wales. It was erected in 1908 and unveiled by General Sir John French on 20 November 1909 to honour the victims of the Second Boer War. It is a Grade II* listed structure.
The memorial was sculpted by the English sculptor, Albert Toft. It lies at the south end of Edward VII Avenue, between the Cardiff Crown Court and City Hall in Cathays Park and is the centre of a U bend in the cul-de-sac.

The Memorial is situated behind City Hall in the Alexandra Gardens. It is a special monument in a beautiful setting especially in the clear Autumn light.

A place of tranquillity. Nice decorated garden.

This section of the castle was by far my favourite. With the magnificent memorial you truly feel the power and commemoration of those who lost their lives fighting for what they loved. The added no photography rule makes this place feel so much more special as to not disturb or disrespect those who laid down their lives.

This park is absolutely beautiful. On a sunny day you can come sit here enjoy the garden, read a book or just chill. It’s just really peaceful and gorgeous. If you happen to be in the area, do stop by.

This monument is called the South African War Memorial, it really should be known as the Boer War Memorial, because that is what it really is. Not the worst of monuments, but not very inspiring and situated in the middle of a roundabout.

A statue of Oliver Cromwell stands outside the House of Commons of the United Kingdom in Westminster, London. Oliver Cromwell was Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland between 1653 and 1658.
The statue was designed by Hamo Thornycroft and erected in 1899. It has divided opinion, both before its erection and since, due to Cromwell's opposition to the British monarchy and his role in the conquest of Ireland. Cromwell stands accused by some of war crimes, religious persecution and ethnic cleansing on a dramatic scale against Catholics in Ireland.
The statue is one of five public statues of Cromwell in the United Kingdom and is Grade II listed for its architectural merit

Those saying the statue should be in a more prominent place probably aren’t too concerned about the secretarian genocide he was responsible for in Ireland, the statue commentating this puritan religious zealot despot would have been vandalised if it wasn’t situated behind the security perimeter of Westminster palace.

This statue of Oliver Cromwell stands outside the House of Commons. You can't really get too close without getting through the gates, but you can see enough through the gates anyway.
The statue was sculpted by Hamo Thornycroft, and depicts Oliver Cromwell standing holding a sword in his right hand with the point of the sword resting on the ground. In his left hand, he is holding a copy of the bible. The statue stands on top of a pedestal with a lion rest at the foot.
Nice statue and definitely worth a look.

The day I visited Portland Bill was on the 15th October 2017. Sadly it was not a very clear day and fairly dull. Hence I did not manage to get the sunny, spectacular views you can normally get from the very top of this Bill. I did, however, return on the 1st May and on the 24th May 2018. Portland is thought of as an island although this isn’t wholly correct in the true sense of the word as it’s reached over a causeway along, what is known as Chesil Beach. Just 4 miles long by a mile and a half wide at its broadest point, this plate of Jurassic limestone is tilted from north to south. This means that if you are on the elevated northern side of the island you are rewarded with stunning views across the Chesil, Portland Harbour & Weymouth.
Portland Bill is a narrow piece of land ( or bill ) at the southern end of the Isle of Portland, and the southernmost point of Dorset. One of Portland's most popular destinations, the popular attraction Portland Bill Lighthouse is found here. The surrounding coast of Portland, namely Portland Bill and Chesil Beach, have been notorious for the many vessels that became shipwrecked in the area over the centuries. The dangerous coastline, which features shallow reefs and the Shambles sandbank, was proven more hazardous due to the strong tidal race is known as the Portland Race. The Bill is still an important way point for coastal traffic, and three lighthouses have been built to protect shipping, in particular from its strong tidal race and shallow reef. The original two lighthouses guided vessels around the coast from 1716, until they were replaced in 1906 by the current lighthouse.
Overlooking Portland Harbour in Dorset stands one of Henry VIII’s finest coastal forts, built in the early 1540’s to protect against the French and Spanish invasion. Portland Castle was built as a consequence of international tensions between England, France and the Holy Roman Empire in the final years of the reign of King Henry VIII. Traditionally the Crown had left coastal defences to the local lords and communities, only taking a modest role in building and maintaining fortifications, and while France and the Empire remained in conflict with one another, maritime raids were common but an actual invasion of England seemed unlikely. Today it provides a great day out for visitors and its audio tour, included in the admission price, tells of the castle’s 450-year history and the part it played in the First and Second World Wars. Portland Castle offers lots to do for families and couples alike, and only four miles from Weymouth, this historic adventure can easily be combined with some more contemporary seaside fun.
Church Ope Cove is located on the Isle of Portland in Dorset. The beach consists of soft limestone pebbles ( although they do feel pretty hard to walk on ) and is surrounded by cliffs on three sides which provide shelter from the often strong breeze in the area. As the beach faces south, it is also something of a sun trap throughout the day. Here, it is first recorded in 789 AD the first Viking raid on the British Isles happened. This cove was believed to be the place they landed. The exposed location was later defended by a Norman 12th Century Rufus Castle, built on the cliff-top overlooking the beach. This remaining castle which can be seen today dates from the late 15th-century.
The cove's area was also used for the building of Portland's first parish church, St Andrews Church, which was probably first established above the cove by the Saxons. St Andrews churchyard, where the ruins stand right on the edge of the east cliffs, has long been the infamous Pirates Graveyard. Built in 1475 on the site of an earlier building, St Andrews was destroyed by fire during a raid. Its rather dubious reputation as a pirates graveyard is based entirely on the fact that some of the headstones and table tombs, both inside and outside the church, have skulls and crossbones carved on them.

Oliver Cromwell was a monster who is responsible for the mass murder of thousands of Irishmen and Catholics in his religious and ethnic cleansing of England and Ireland. He is not someone for Britain to be proud of.

Stunning views and a great place to start your Portland walk. There is free parking in surrounding streets and a larger car park just down the road. From here you can walk the Portland circuit. We did the clockwise circuit which was great. Many things to see and do. Church Ope Cove is a must see as well as the stunning Portland Bill lighthouse.

As others have said, I thought this was one of the highlights of the castle. It's a shame it can't be reached without buying a ticket to enter the castle complex to be more widely appreciated. However, once there, it's a beautiful and moving sight. It's a great tribute to the huge sacrifice made by the many it commemorates. They deserve so much more but certainly no less. It's good that photography is not allowed inside to preserve the solemnity of the building, even though the interior is quite striking.

The fact that I admire about this place is their meticulous record of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in WWI (1914-1918).

It's a joke that we honour this monster with a statue at Parliament. Regardless of his achievements in disbanding feudalism and empowering democracy, he was a prejudiced, barbaric, crazed ethnic cleanser.
