It's a great place for watching a show (and there are good shows here), but I don't understand why the drinks here were much more expensive than other bars in this area (same drink , same evening for example) and why the bartender was not nice to say the least and with full attitude. Again, not as I experienced at other bars in this area.
The guy at the front was much nicer than him. It's kinda of a basement and if there are other options I don't see a reason to come back here. I'll come back only if one of my friends is showing.

There should be huge signs telling ppl to keep their phones in their hands bc someone swiped my friend’s phone out of her bag. I think they watch for distracted ppl who are making out. It’s really not safe to allow girls to be stranded without their phones in the city at those hours. The vibe was good otherwise. And pls make more phone announcements bc we only realized her phone was missing after an announcement at like 2 am. The alcohol is also too sweet.

The bar staff was cool and very knowledgeable. The music and atmosphere of the bar is that of a nostaligic, quintessential, east village dive bar experience. And the drinks are inexpensive!
Went there several times during July with friends. Always cool . Last Saturday , we had one round of more than 70 dollars but were charged twice the same amount . Mistakes can happen . We emailed 2 times using the email adress of manager mentionned on the website but emails came back non delivered. We went there personally last Monday afternoon and left a written note to the manager ( we were told our message will be given ) but no answer . Then we used the contact page of their website explaining the situation. : no reply… so now it is no more a question of a possible technical mistake … it is just robbery … so when there , if you leave your credit card , and even if you sign ONE BILL, keep in mind you can be charged two times the same amount …

This is my absolute favorite place in New York City. Jason always takes care of us every time. One of the final true Queer vibes in the city, and a complete miracle. I love boiler room.
It’s such an inspirational place! Loved the vibe, the beautiful decor that takes you through the history of the place. We didn’t eat, so couldn’t rate it. It’s totally worth a visit!

Rude bartenders, had to literally ask to be served. Draft beer was warm. Both bartenders had a chip on thier shoulders. Ruined the whole vibe.
Sux that our community can be drizzled with bad seeds instead of all coming together and unite.

All things considered, one of the safer experiences I’ve had in a bar, especially as a lesbian. I felt safe enough to leave my coat on a hanger, and the attendees generally seemed to look out for one another. Can be quite crowded, but it’s also a pretty wide open space, so I felt there was something of an equilibrium there.

Other elements of the atmosphere left something to be desired, though. Felt like the environment was designed to serve people who just turned 21, which I totally get, but what confused me most was the music. I went on a night where DJ Mariko was playing, and it was like 50 Cent, Flo Rida, and Ying Yang Twins?? Who is this for, millennial real estate agents? How about some Syd? Janelle Monae? Missy Elliott???! Straightest lesbian bar in the tri-state area.

I was having a great experience at Phoenix this evening. The bartender was kind and attentive, the drinks were top notch, and the atmosphere was so fun. Then, a new bartender (or barback?) started his shift. My friends and I were playing pool, and he knocked one of the remaining balls in to the pocket and insisted it was time for beer pong. This would make sense if folks were clamoring to play, but no one had any interest in playing. When I questioned why he had halted our game, Sean responded aggressively and nonsensically. I’d like to give all the praise to Phoenix as an establishment; but Sean needs to better understand how to interact with patrons who are just having fun and enjoying the space. Hopefully, Sean the Barback learns how to better interact with guests in the future.

Will update this to 5 stars once it's confirmed that Sean no longer has a job here. Very rude and condescending. Completely ruined what was an otherwise very fun night. Embarrassing behavior and completely uncalled for.
One of my favorite places to go to for a few Cocktails and live piano music all night long. Quite regularly there are some amazing singers that simply happen to stop by and treat us to a performance of a lifetime. Full of great people, service and wonderful musicians.

Best gay bar in the city

Jason and Leo were friendly and great. Well priced drinks. Excited that they’re moving to a new space close by. Will definitely come back soon
It was my first time there last night July 21 2023 celebrating a early birthday the Bartenders where nice and cool. the only bad thing was the music suck. Ms Lisa the owner is a nice humble young lady. hopefully they could make two days night Lesbian night only.

I've been going to this bar since the late 90's, the drinks are cheap and the atmosphere is comfortable. I usually go on Sunday afternoon where the crowd is more laid-back and the music is awesome. The bartender goes out of his way to keep the music interesting, and not another annoying Britney Spears marathon like you'd find on the west side. It's honestly like an old shirt you keep wearing even though it has holes in it. It's to comfortable to replace and you don't care what it looks like, because it feels so right. My only complaints are the bar stools & the dying AC. Otherwise it's like going to Cheers except the gay dive version.

Was vacationing in New York and my partner and i decided to visit here thinking it’d be fun. The girl at the front checking ID’s was rude to us but we said whatever and went in anyways. The cover charge is 13$ per person!! We spent over $70 that night. Drinks were insanely expensive and watered down af, had two mixed drinks each and felt nothing. Music sucked it was a bunch of repetitive EDM that was hard to dance to after one or two songs. It was wayyyy too packed in there and it was hard to dance even if you wanted to. People are jumping around dancing and it’s hard to get off the dance floor if you want to. Website is super misleading as you’re expecting a historic lgbt bar but it’s really just an overpriced night club. Wont be returning when we come back to nyc

Come rain or shine, the Boiler Room has been there for roughly 3 decades, and I would feel lost without it. If you don't know the place, you should. Drinks are cheap and good and bartenders are great - they like to make sure you have a good time.

And it's Cash Only which is fine by me - there's an ATM by the door.
It’s scary and sad to know two deaths happens in the 80s and once in 1993 to know two serial murders happen at this very lively old town house gay bar honestly after that truthful documentary I’d be hesitant to want to go back here. Been coming here in the early mid 80s

Playhouse is a place my friends and I used to go to but lately it has just become another "trendy" spot for what seems like tons of straight people to frequent, which really just alters the atmosphere of a space that's meant to be queer.

Honestly sometimes it feels like the only thing gay about this place is the DJ.

There’s a reason you can’t review this bar on Facebook. Your Wednesday night bartender has ZERO personality and charges whatever he wants depending on the person. My husband was charged $8 for a drink and I was charged $20 for one. As someone who works in the service industry business I still tipped as annoyed as I was but I will never step foot into this bar again. You people need to do better. Avoid this bar! I’ll never go back.

I was in this bar on the last day of pride month 2023. I love this bar no matter what. But tonight was different. The young person who was the waiter in the bar tonight was kind and attentive. I am disabled and he made sure I was ok and had my ginger ale drinks. So sweet. Also the entertainment was wonderful. I don’t know the red heads name from drag race but thank you for recognizing an ally. I’m here for it…❤️❤️

The first gay bar I’d ever been to. I was 16 with a paper bracelet my friend’s cousin had passed back to me.

That was 18 years ago, and I don’t say this to disparage the bar. It was literally the first time I was ever able to be myself. It might sound silly with the underwear parties or whatever, but I consider this place holy ground. My own personal stonewall.

Regardless of which friends I brought with me, they all had a great time here. The drinks are strong which is always good. Gonna miss this place, hope they find a new location.
One of my favourite places to go! The drinks are not badly priced. There is outdoor sitting, however, if you buy a drink from inside you can’t sit in the outdoor sitting area and and if you order drinks from the outdoor sitting area you can’t take them inside till you close out your tab. The inside bar and the outside sitting area are two different tabs. The people that work here are wonderful as always. There’s always something going on, especially during pride month. A welcoming atmosphere for sure.

Came here on Saturday for one hour. Got one drink and was overcharged 368$ to my account that I never signed. Currently waiting for them to contact me back as I have left voicemails and contacted my bank. Hoping this was a genuine mistake of the bartender or system. Will update if they ever contact me back. WATCH For card mishandling!!!

Came in here on a Wednesday night and it was karaoke. It was a fun decent sized crowd for a weeknight in the EV. Hosted by drag queen Corma Kelly- she kept the fun going with her pop up shows. Great service also. Would recommend for a fun night in East village
Not disability friendly. My gf and a couple of friends came here one night and bouncer demanded my gf give up her seat even though she’s disabled asking her to prove her disability. He proceeded to take the chair and came back 10 min later telling us we could sit on some odd surface that was not meant for seating and hard to sit on. Other seating that was available was blocked off and reserved even though no one came all night. Not ADA compliant at all.

The manager was cold and unhelpful when presented an issue with the broken jukebox, and after asking for tequila shots, we were given something that did not taste like alcohol. When I questioned what it was we were given (after paying), the bartender told me I was drunk (I had ordered one drink prior). Her attitude towards me felt like she was talking down to me. Other people of color have felt a similar experience of racism and discomfort.

Great ambiance, the drinks are on par, good local spot
I’ve been there a few times on a Saturday night and I haven’t been impressed. The drinks are watered down and expensive. My friend and I bought the same drink but for some reason she was charged more. The DJ is bad and boring plays a bunch of playlist songs from the 2000s. Last time I went my friend and I just decided to leave and go to Stonewall and the DJ a there was a thousand percent better.

Not a fan of the very narrow layout, but that's just personal. It's a niche spot for African-Americans and Latinos, so if you look Caucasian, don't expect people to be friendly with you there. Segregation at its peak.
Oh me...oh my....what eulogy I may say. This is a place, on Sunday at least, where old gays (unlike moi), go to....die. ( tears! tears! tears!). I stayed. Had a drink. Listen to the old gays, and an ancient woman (I actually liked her) sing their melancholy tunes... and I cried. And quietly slipped out... so as not to get clawed and stabbed by any of’em. Lol

At first, I was really liking the place. But then last night 05/13/23 one of the security guys (tall, skinny, light skinned w/tattoos on his arm) accused myself and two of my friends of doing drugs in the bathroom (which we weren't and he was watching us use the bathroom) and kicked us out and calling my friend all types of disrespectful names. I definitely won't be back, and it's a shame cause I actually did like the environment.

IMO the best gay bar in the East Village. Great dim-lit atmosphere with colorful lights, groovy music with frequent themed DJ nights, friendly bartenders Patrick and Valentino, pool table, and always an interesting crowd. East village locals, NYU kids, old, young. It’s one of those special NYC places where everybody comes together.

DO NOT COME HERE. especially if you are a queer woman. the bar tender was EXTREMELY rude (see photo attached). I came to this establishment with a group of queer women on a friday night and we left feeling extremely belittled. extremely disappointing staff, do better. you people need to read some queer history and get off your extremely weird high horse. also, you dont accept mastercard?? it’s 2023, grow up and get a grip. treat your community better. do better. upsetting and unforgivable. this establishment is sick and whatever you stand for is not the message of gay love. sick.

Went on Monday night at 8 - it was not crowded. I was completely ignored by the bartenders while standing there at an empty spot at the bar with cash in my hand. They served the group of guys next to me and then went to the other side of the bar to chat with friends. Other bartenders continued to pass through the bar and looked at me without saying a word. I left because I couldn't get a drink or cash to tip the drag artists. Really a bummer since I came from out of state with a plan to see both drag shows that night.

This place is great during later evenings to night sharp, however, we went there during evening time and it has few people but bar tender was very friendly and funny. I had such a great time visiting this bar on a Wednesday afternoon! I was visiting New York for the week, and got to chat with Pat the bartender. He was super friendly and made me some great gin & tonics! Also gave me some great recommendations to continue exploring the neighborhood. Thank you Pat for a wonderful time! I hope to be back next time I am in New York.
You are NOT a bar unless you have simple syrup and other accoutrement behind the bar.
You're just another dive gay bar.
If you require patrons to have proper attire...I expect your bar to be properly stocked.
Also having some friendly bar staff wouldn't hurt
Place is full of history and character, set in the historic Christopher St area. Was busy when we arrived but there was still plenty seats. A slightly younger crowd than I was expecting but everyone was having a fun Friday night out - Great measures for spirits! 🏳️‍🌈🇺🇸

It’s a shame we have to state this obvious fact of inclusivity within our very own community . For years we have fought to seek Justice of equal rights , within our own parameters to the very world that has always hated and discriminated us for simply existing , there’s always been a space of love serving our very own . Unfortunately I cannot say the same for this place any longer. Based on the discriminatory acts towards me and my friends from abroad ( Latin America ) . We no longer feel like this is a truly all inclusive welcoming place for queer people of color and will be looking elsewhere to bring future queer and trans people for bar recommendations . Perhaps if my friends were from Europe like the bouncer said they might let me in. So that’s where my business will be taken. Two stars because they used to let us and our group did enjoy the food and drinks in before rather the new bouncers are off their limits.
Good vibes, good people, great employees. The only way they could improve it is by adding more seating areas and giving the closing Saturday DJ more playing time.

The bar is a lot of fun on club nights, but the bartenders and coat check staff are phenomenally unfriendly. That’s my only gripe about the place. Love the drag queens (especially Alotta McGriddles), even the door staff is fine. Basically come here for the djs, the diversity is great, the drinks are expectedly gay bar strong, but be ready to test your patience with the bar staff.

I have been coming to “Pieces” at 8 Christopher Street, Manhattan for a number of years. I especially love this gay bar because of its pleasant atmosphere with super efficient and friendly bartenders Jason and Jamison. This place isn’t what it used to be and last night the bartender was awful not only did he have a bad attitude, he gave us the impression that he didn’t want to be there. My friend and I ordered two ciders and asked for a squirt of bitters in it. You would have thought I asked for something completely outrageous. My friend and I decided to stay for a second beer each and this time the bartender charged me a dollar more for each beer because of a squirt of bitters. Rather than get into with him, we decided never to return. I don’t need to get attitude from a bartender when I am supporting their business and I also don’t need to be swindled for a squirt of bitters. I’ll take my business elsewhere where the staff isn’t so bitter.

This would be a 5 star review had we not received completely unreasonable treatment by the bar management. We had a great night, enjoyed a couple drinks, and really enjoyed the vibe and the DJ until the end, when management accused me and my partner of going into the same restroom when we absolutely had not. We had gone into adjacent restrooms at the same time (which were actually filthy for the record), and as soon as we came out, we were asked to leave by the manager (?), who then immediately disappeared into the back room without letting us explain it had been a misunderstanding. This was surprising and upsetting, as we were visiting from a city without a lesbian bar scene and had been having a pleasant, relatively chill night which ended too soon.

Bad place to go. Unsafe. Bartenders extremely unprepared and rude to costumers. Drinks are questionable and unreliable. They only accept cash, you won't have proof of what you drank. Besides myself, I know several women who had a very bad time after going to this bar. The bar stinks, the toilets are filthy. If you go to this bar, it's better to go with friends and never alone. I attended and today I don't recommend it. There are many other places that offer much more quality and especially safety if you're queer.

We went early in the morning and it was super empty. The little park and the building; being a part of LGBTQ+ history were important and significant to see.

Awful, aloof bartender. Hard pass. Don’t waste your tips. Also, nothing remotely worth it about the ambiance or the patrons. Not quite as gross as the bartender wearing a too-tight shirt (poor thing ain’t got a body to flaunt anymore, maybe 😐), but the crowd was literal LOL messy (like the bartender’s face)

My friend and I were bar hopping, and decided to go to this bar.. upon getting there I decided not to have another drink as I was driving in the next hour or so (my friend do not drink) but we decide to stay awhile and enjoy the ambience and conversation. While we were sitting we were approached by one of the bartenders who ask if we were getting a drink , we replied not right now. He then replied if you’re not getting a drink then you have to leave! Note, the bar was not full at all and no one else was standing waiting for a seat plus this is a dive bar. It is interesting that the two African Americans were approached in such a rude manner! When some of the other patrons who also weren’t drinking were not approached. So question: Can people only come to this bar if they are drinking? Can they not come for the music, to play pool, to converse? How did you not know that although I may not have bought a drink then I wouldn’t return and frequent this establishment? At that point even if I was about to buy a drink I certainly would not have again!! Need less to say we left! I would NEVER recommend this rude establishment!

Loved dancing here when they opened a few years ago. Now it’s VERY UNSAFE! Phone was pickpocketed. Reported it to bar staff and security and they didn’t assist! They said it’s expected and that this + drink spiking happens all the time! 🤮 Sadly, never coming back again!!
This is a more old school looking piano bar with three bar areas, two upstairs and one downstairs, with the piano being in the back room. Decent amount of space to lounge with a drink. Patrons skew older and more mature, if that's not your thing then probably not the place for you. I was here on a Friday night with a fun lady pianist with a nice voice and skills taking fun requests. Outside of the piano room, there's no loud blaring music so this place definitely tends more towards meeting and talking to new guys versus a more clubby atmosphere. No cover charge on the night I attended, not sure if there is one past a certain hour though (it was maybe around midnight?)

Classy gay bar for after work or a Saturday night out. 2 bars on the ground floor with a grand piano and a smaller, more quite bar at the basement. There’s a plethora of seating options (barstools, high tables, sofas, armchairs and even a loveseat!).

The staff is in uniform and very professional but also friendly and they make good drinks. The clientele is mostly well dressed mature gay men that might appear clique-ish at first but they’re mostly friendly and down to earth people. Lots of tourists too.

It’s my favorite gay bar in NYC.
Nowhere bar with solid cocktails and good food. There are lots of tables for small groups that are intimate and cozy and then a decent size bar.

Cocktails were great, the menu has a lot of interesting concoctions but they bartenders also served the classics. They also have a small food menu- the sliders hit the spot after an afternoon turned evening of lots of drinking!

My favorite bar from the ones I visited in New York. The decorations, the space, the fun and welcoming vibes, the people, the pop hits they were playing, the price of the drinks... everything was great and would love to come back if I visit New York again. A safe and fun place!

Patrick was a great time and bar tender. He’s definitely bringing gay back and it makes me feel at home. Will definitely be back once we move back home next year! Thank you for keeping it a queer bar right next to my partners moms house. You will feel loved here

So glad to see this place open! It has a classic vibe and sitting at the bar is a great opportunity for people watching as you see them descend into the subway stop outside. Good service and food (I don’t eat meat, but had a feast of side dishes that were excellent). Excited to go back and have another cocktail.

Gay friend took me and some other friends both from the city and visiting from out of town here. Everyone here was friendly and welcoming from the staff to the other people there to have a good time. It may be a gay bar but everyone is welcome and everyone makes you feel welcome. Good food and drinks, good services. The food and drinks are reasonably priced too especially for NYC. There's a nice little quasi-outdoor area and the DJ was awesome and was playing music that really had me in a fun mood just enjoying myself and the company of my friends. It is extremely hard to talk in there especially to the staff at the bar but you work through it the best you can

Perfect and attentive bartenders (only two at the moment) who do an amazing job with such huge crowds. Very friendly patrons as well.
Great place to meet mature men and tourists. Piano music. Pics were early as it was crowded later.

Surprisingly fun! We walked right by it at first, it's definitely a dive, but the bartender was attentive, the crowd was very low key, great place to lounge and have a drink!

Lots of history and the bartenders were super cool. We stopped by mid-afternoon on Saturday and this was the perfect spot to cool off from the heatwave outside. They didn't have any beer on tap, but they had a pretty standard selection of cans and bottles, plus the Stonewall IPA from Brooklyn Brewery.

Awful place, they don't have nice drinks , they lie to you on the specials!!!!

There was a benefit auction raffle that was supposed to be at 10 pm at it started one hour earlier without notice!!! Surprisingly the people who knew the personnel won the prizes on the raffle contest!

NOT GO THERE!!!

Photo below of the friends winner.. That laughing on us!

first time at a gay bar and it was really fun. drag performances were funny, animated, and entertaining. bathrooms are cleaner than i expected, but be prepared to wait in line as there are only 6 stalls. as for drinks, i payed $11 for a rum and coke.

Normally love this spot but tonight was weird. I ordered a Jameson on rocks and the bartender gave me a pint of Jameson. I was flattered but also like ...what's this? He said "you ordered 5 whiskeys on rocks" .... When I kindly asked for just one not five he tripped and proceeded to become aggressive.

This bartender took it to level 11.

3 stars for Nowhere being a cool spot and -2 for the psycho bartender.

Been here 3 times.
Friendly staff, good Drag shows, and drinks are great value.
Bartenders should pour drinks in a glass though, especially when you order premium liquor, and not well, instead of serving it in a plastic cup. Or at least ask.
Would go back though, was fun.

One of the best bars I have been to in NYC 🏳️‍🌈 We were there on a Monday afternoon and it was still buzzing and atmospheric as if it was a Friday or Saturday night. Deb on the bar was friendly, welcoming and hilarious, playing great tunes, drinking games and handing out free pizza! Super quirky and colourful decor inside. The happy hour is also great - $5 fizz! This bar is a must visit!!

If you like admiring sculptured pecs while you down a few this is a great place. Boxers seems to be short staffed with causes those hard pec feelings to wane quickly. There are some game tables and there is some space to distance which are both a big plus. You will also find screens and I think this is more of a chat than dance atmosphere.

Dark urban gay bar. The DJ is pretty good, Friday cover includes one drink, but not a very crowded place. Unfortunately, the music is old soul and r&b classics. And pack your wallet...this is a CASH ONLY bar.

The place is rather small and often overcrowded. Service can be slow. Some of the bartenders are unattentive. A place however where African-Americans can meet.
Happy hour is a good time to visit if you like crowds.
