This graceful monument was erected in the late 19th century and serves to commemorate one of Italy’s most influential literary figures, Dante Alighieri, sometimes referred to simply as ‘il Sommo Poeta’ (or ‘the Supreme Poet’). He is most famously the author of the Divine Comedy: a three-part work that narrates the story of the poet’s journey through the afterlife (including Hell, Purgatory and Paradise), guided by the ghost of the ancient Roman poet Virgil, to find his lost love, Beatrice. The work set the benchmark for the Italian language of today. Moreover, the Divine Comedy was a formative influence on some of the most famous writers of all time, including Chaucer, Shakespeare and Milton.

Cannot be missed when walking to the ticket office and entrance of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. Dante himself is buried inside the church.

Apart from the crowds, this is one of the most impressive views of the Piazza and the Basilica de Santa Croce where among those buried are Michelangelo, Rossini, Bruni, Galileo and the wonderful statue to Dante stands outside the front of the Basilica. Book your tickets in advance and spend some time soaking up the essence of Florence and the power of the Medici family. A must when in Florence..... among many!! Book every visit wherever you go in advance online to avoid the lengthy queues even in late October!!!

This was one of our stops during our Walking Tour of Florence on our 2-week long trip through Italy. It is amazing how much Sculpture Art is spread around throughout Italy that is still in such good condition after hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of years. That is a testimonial to the remarkable durability of tgat pure White Carrera Marble used over the centuries.

Dante Alighieri is widely considered the father of the Italian language. His most famous work, "The Divine Comedy," is a masterpiece of Italian literature.
