Following Galileo's death in Arcetri in 1642, his remains were temporarily placed in a room near the chapel of Saints Cosmas and Damian in the Basilica of Santa Croce, Florence. Plans for a grand tomb faced opposition from ecclesiastical authorities who cited Galileo's condemnation by the Church. Despite Vincenzo Viviani's efforts over the years, the memorial faced resistance until 1737, during the reign of Gian Gastone. Finally, the monumental tomb of Galileo was inaugurated, now situated on the left upon entering the basilica, housing both Galileo and Vincenzo Viviani's mortal remains.

Aquí puedes encontrar la primer tumba de Galileo y la actual. La primera está en la Capilla Medici al fondo del lado izquierdo y la segunda en la Iglesia junto con las demás.
