for history lovers

Home of the St Mary's County Historical Society, the house built in 1798 is all that remains of an 1,100 acre plantation. The original deed from 1744 hangs in the Board Room (originally the balloon).
The building was owned 1st by the Barnes then by the Key family. It became the County's 1st library in 1951 then was sold to the Historical Society. It's on the National Registry of Historical Buildings and part of the Maryland Historical Trust list of protected properties.
The famous Moll Dyer Rock was relocated here in 2021 and is now protected and illuminated at night.
If you are into genealogy and the history of St Mary's County, this is the place.

Very helpful!!

Very historical and serene

Accused witch Moll Dyer froze to death in the winter of 1698, supposedly at the large historic rock moved to the property as a memorial for Dyer in 2021 by the St Mary's County Historical Society, which now operates out of the Hall. Moll Dyer, then an old woman living in a hut outside of town, was accused of witchcraft and of causing a flu epidemic. Her home was burned down, and she froze to death as a result. Baseless accusations and blaming others for our misfortunes is still as dangerous now as then!

I came to visit the plaques.

History at its best..
