This is one of the city's many obelisks and is located just behind Santa Maria Maggiore. While it appears to be Egyptian, many believe it is Roman made.
It seems that this obelisk was originally located at Mausoleum of Augustus, became of the ruins there before being lost for several centuries after being buried during the Middle Ages. Rediscovered in the l6th-century, it was restored given a make over and erected here in its present location.

Standing adjacent to the basilica is the obelisco of Esquilino and it stands grand and tall in the square. Located in central Rome, the Obelisco is a site to behold and is one of the tallest ones in the city.
The basilica is free to enter with a security check and it is well worth the visit, it is beautiful within and every room is engaging and flourishing with art and awe. Well worth any visit.

Not much to see but worth a look on the way passed.

Is a very nice obelisk outside an amazingly beautiful basilica. It’s located in a very lovely area, definitely lots to see and do in and around this area. It worth taking a visit to this obelisk and basilica.

Nice place to visit in Rome!

One of the most amazing things about Rome is how close everything is to each other. You can literally walk a short distance from one monument to the other. There are a few of these Obeliscos throughout the city, each similar but with their own character and different surroundings. We saw this one in the early morning, there weren't that many people and I'm sure other nearby monuments draw the crowds away from here. These make for great landmarks to meet up if you're traveling in a group, you'd be easy to find and the crowd wouldn't be bad. This one is great, the location is open, our daughter had a fun time walking around here and exploring. We didn't enter, or buy tickets, we just hung out outside.
