Most dishes are good, no complaints, except for the 芋泥鴨,the taro paste is too thick and just leaves you eating taro mud and very little duck. Will not order this again.

Located in Richmond BC, Shanghai River Restaurant is a longtime Richmond staple. High quality ingredients, well crafted, delicious, generous portions; excellent service; free garage parking; top 10 Chinese restaurants in BC area 👍

So we know the three categories are food, service and atmosphere that Google uses to score a restaurant. All 3 are a hard solid 5 stars.

I personally never visited Asia / far east, so really don’t know what authentic fruit from this area of the world is like. However I’m a truly adventurous person and have tried food from many parts of the world. I could not believe I ate this evening unfortunately didn’t take any pictures but but it was out of this world. The atmosphere in the restaurant was unreal. It was primarily people of those descent listed above, so I felt kind of special if they want to eat here I will absolutely want to eat here.
Sorry if this is corny but if you’re really looking for something authentic, I highly recommend this restaurant.
Don’t be shy, ask your waiter or waitress to help you decide what to order they have great attention to detail ensuring your experience will be one to remember

This restaurant has been here for a long time, serving up fresh and delicious Shanghainese cuisine. Always a good time with friends and family for any meal of the day here. Servers are quick and attentive. Can get very busy during peak times. Nice to see a restaurant have lasting power these days.

Things I tried:
* Shanghai Dumpling w/ Crab Meat
* Shanghai Dumpling w/ Minced Pork
* Pan Fried Pork Soft Buns
* Fried Turnip Pastry
* Deep Fried Bean Curd Skin w/ Mushroom
* Fried Shanghai Style Rice Cakes
-
Not sure if we came on an off day because I thought the food was mediocre. Some of my usual favourites weren’t executed well here so I was a bit disappointed.

Items I would order here:
•crab soup dumplings - The xiao long bao soup base had the sweetness of fresh seafood. My only wish was for more soup! 😂
•sheng jian bao - This also lacked soup but it was nicely fried. What they lacked in soup made up in the quality of pork. The meat filling was less fatty compared to the buns sold in crystal mall, which may explain why there were less juices in these buns…
•Deep fried bean curd skin with mushroom

Items I would pass on:
•turnip pastry - The radish and green onions inside the pastry tasted really strong, almost like raw? Usually, they would sauté the ingredients inside the pastry. The whole pastry was quite dry.
•Shanghai stir fry rice cakes - I think this was over cooked, it was too soft & not chewy enough. Flavour was lacking, the chef could have added more salt or soy sauce.

The Dim Sum was amaaaazing!!

We ordered a TON of takeout with our friends. It was my first time visiting Vancouver, so of course we had to try some Chinese food in Richmond! This place was recommended by our friends we were staying with and it did NOT disappoint.

The black vinegar pork was my favorite!! I’ve never had a dish like that before and it was incredible. Also the dumplings were amazing and the noodles. Will definitely be back if I ever visit Vancouver/Richmond again!
